GUNC Stars Reach Field Guide

Stars Reach: Surveying with the Pathfinder

The Pathfinder leads you to survey nodes, reveals terrain, and helps you leave useful waypoints for yourself or a group.

Follow the Pathfinder to reveal and survey nodes, then use the Map to see which parts of the planet still need coverage.

Getting ready for unmapped ground

Using the Pathfinder

Follow the Pathfinder's tone and compass toward a survey node. When the node appears red, aim at it and use Left MB. Green means it has been surveyed.

Open the Map first

Look for surveyed ground, blank areas, settlements, portals, camps, and useful markers.

Pack for the ground between nodes

Bring food, medicine, repairs, movement support, and a fallback suited to the planet.

Pick a landmark for the return

Start from a portal, town, camp, or feature you can find again.

Follow the sound and compass

Pause for the first reading

Stand still for a moment, then turn slowly and listen for the stronger or more frequent response.

Move in short legs

Walk toward the stronger reading, stop at a safe landmark, and compare again.

Slow down near the node

Watch the ground and nearby slopes as the signal becomes more precise.

Return to the last good reading

If the direction stops making sense, go back to the last point you trusted and scan again.

Reveal and survey the node

Clear nearby danger

Deal with creatures, fire, falling ground, or another interruption before using the node.

Red means revealed

A red node has been found but still needs to be surveyed.

Use Left MB

Aim the Pathfinder at the node and use Left MB. Green confirms that the survey is complete.

Open the Map

Press M to see the newly revealed area and choose where to search next.

Work through the rest of the map

Follow the surveyed edge

Search along the border between mapped and unmapped terrain so each node opens the next useful area.

Use landmarks you can find again

Ridges, lakes, roads, structures, and portals make better directions than a temporary guess.

Save waypoints for useful places

Mark camps, Makers, difficult crossings, safe routes, and unfinished builds when your current skills allow it.

Complete all 64 nodes

Surveying every node fills out the entire planet map.
