GUNC Stars Reach Field Guide

Stars Reach: How to Tame Creatures

Approach slowly, watch the creature's mood, offer the right food, and know when it is time to back away.

This guide covers the sound and visual cues that tell you when to wait, when to move, and when a taming attempt has failed.

Can I tame it?

Do you ever find yourself wondering: Can I pet that huge monstrosity?

The answer… maybe!

A Wayfarer watches a large creature from a safe distance.

Getting started

Taming creatures is not for the faint of heart, it requires patience and a little bit of luck.

You start by finding a creature you’re hoping to tame and slowly approaching, crouching once the creature has noticed you.

You’ll get a sound cue (a bit of an ominous noise like some sci-fi machine humming to life) as well as a visual cue:

The curious mood icon.

Wait for the creature to relax

Now you wait (being sure not to move) until the creature has relaxed. The curious alien will be replaced by a relieved one:

The relieved mood icon.

Move closer

From there you can approach again (remembering to stay crouched) and simply repeat these steps in a game of red-light-green-light until you’re close enough to interact with the creature.

Offer Food appears when you are close enough to interact.

Offer food

Now that you’re close you’ll see the option needed to attempt to pacify the creature: Offer Food.

Each creature wants something different, and typically it will be something logical (a deer may want salt), but we’ll leave you to discover on your own what each creature in the universe craves.

If you don’t have what the creature wants…

If the creature gets angry

Be warned: Should you see an angry looking alien at any point during the taming attempt, that means it’s over. Time to run or fight.

The angry mood icon means the taming attempt is over.

Try again later

Even if you get close enough during a fight, the creature will not accept anything you have to offer. You will need to run away and come back if you want to try again.

Once you succeed the creature will follow you around and no longer be hostile.

A successfully tamed creature follows the Wayfarer and is no longer hostile.
